Basketball Guru is a fantasy basketball league built around the idea of salaries and a hard salary cap. Some people refer to it as a "dynasty" league. This means this league runs 24/7, and hopefully, everyone returns season after each season.
We choose real NBA teams, we abide by real NBA contracts, draft real rookies, and we hold our very own free agency period.
We'll use this forum as a place to post trades, talk in the chatbox, message each other privately, and bid on players. It hosts all of the rules and important stuff, so you'll want to bookmark this site (in addition to the ESPN league).
If you haven't done a league like this before, it might seem a little too intense right now. Honestly, once we get it going it is pretty low energy during the season. The busiest part is the offseason (drafting + free agency). Don't worry, its simple.
Important Note: Rosters are set to how they looked directly after the 2015 playoffs ended (more below). The only exception is rookie players who signed early extensions (Davis, Lillard).
Here's a breakdown of the flow of the league:
1) We choose teams. The rosters for these teams are based off of how they entered the 2015 offseason, meaning, they don't have the rookies they drafted, their trades never happened, and free agents didn't sign. Before you choose your team, you will want to look at their roster on the master spreadsheet to see who is there and who isn't.
Once 16 teams are chosen, all of the remaining players from the unchosen teams will be entered into a "Reload Draft."
2) The Reload Draft. Using a randomly generated order, each GM will select a player from one of the unchosen NBA teams (not current free agents). We will proceed through the draft for a predetermined amount of rounds. When you select a player, you inherit their real life NBA contract.
3) The Rookie Draft. Using the 2015 NBA draft selection order, we will host a rookie draft. All of the 2015 NBA rookies are NOT on their real NBA teams in this league. There will be 3 rounds to the rookie drafts so that 48 rookies will be drafted. You inherit their real NBA contracts as well.
When you select a team, you get their draft position as well. All of the unchosen teams are discarded and chosen teams just move up in the draft. (Ex.) No one takes NYK, but someone takes ORL, the Magic would move from #5 to #4
4) Free Agency. Using SB Nation's list of 2015 NBA Free Agents, we will then bid on the players we like. Note: if a player opted in to their 2016 contract (i.e. Eric Gordon) he is not an available free agent. There is a list of free agents on the roster spreadsheet and rules can be found on the homepage.
5) We trade. If you've never played in a league like this before, you may be surprised at the amount of trades that go down. You are free to private message (PM) GMs to discuss deals and then post agreed upon deals in the Trade Center thread. Assuming both guys have a good reason to make the trade, it will go through. If it seems like clear cheating (i.e. LeBron for Corey Brewer and a 1st) the trade will be cancelled. Basically, don't cheat and you will be fine.
6) The Season. We will play our actual fantasy basketball on the ESPN platform, in a 16-team league. Once the season is over, we will host a draft lottery for the next rookie draft.
