Whiteside is a bit of a weird player to have to re-sign. Despite an incredibly efficient shooter, he’s extremely limited offensively. However, he makes up for it with his rebounds and blocks (which are worth more in our league). I have compared contract against some similar players. I avoided Deandre Jordan because his contract is that from the NBA (waaayyy too much).

Similar to what the Thunder did I utilized excel to determine what Whiteside’s salary should be based on what Horford got. Before you think I’m an idiot, let me begin by saying Whiteside likely has 5 more prime/solid years in him while Horford is still producing but on the decline. Looking into these numbers more it’s rather obvious that Whiteside is a true center and that’s about it. Whiteside is a defensive anchor with stick-em on his hands when a rebound goes in the air. The ideal candidate for salary comparison would be DeAndre Jordan, but his contract is absurd for this league and in fantasy points.
What I thought was looking at players with similar rebound stats and those who get a lot of blocks. Averaging Howard, and Drummond’s current contracts (Howard was released, and his contract will likely be reduced in free agency) it would be approximately 12.5 million/year. If Drummond were to be re-signed I would expect for him to be on roughly 15-16/year, and Howard will probably be around 12/year. I don’t have a ton of logic toward it, but that’s what my gut is saying.
Overall, Horford’s contract seems fair. He’s productive, but is aging quickly. Whiteside is a bit of an unknown, but he is younger than Horford, so adding ~2-3 million onto what the math says that I should do seems reasonable. Therefore, I’m offering 65 million over 5 years with the last year being a team option (would be 13/year).
After working with my team to determine the appropriate contract I then had Monroe, George, and Knight sit down with myself and whiteside to hash out why he should stay with the bucks. I preached to whiteside that we will be a competitive team. We have a really strong team with him here, definitely capable of reaching the playoffs. Moreover, he signs at this rate we will still be able to make a splash in free agency and make sure we get another asset to compete. George commented that without his skill set we will not make the playoffs, he lamented that we want to compete now ("we aren't getting any younger, I need to bring a ship to MKE"-George). Monroe then chimed in saying that he knows he is a horrible defender and wants a defensive anchor in the middle so the tabloids lay off of him. Monroe also commented that the duo of Whiteside and himself will be a fortress down low, a great one two punch of offense and defense. "Lob city ain't shit, block city in the MKE, let's get it"-Monroe. Knight and George both praised Whiteside for his ability to crash the offensive glass. Likening it to a receiver that has "stick-em" on his gloves. They also mentioned that they know he loves being a man down low, getting rebounds is all about desire and they know he has it. As GM, we know he wants that role, the big man enforcer who crashes that glasses and swats the hell out of weak layups.
Wrapping up our discussion, we commented that for the next 3 seasons we have 4 dominant players that each have an obvious role. A championship is possible. Whiteside seemed excited to extend with the bucks, and close out his career with opportunities at a championship.
