Minnesota Sends
PG Ricky Rubio 13.40 14.10 14.80
Detroit Sends
DET 2018 1st
C/PF Marreese Speights 0.50 0.50 0.50
When I inherited this team, it was loaded with young talent and weighed down by a trio of huge contracts that accounted for more than half of the cap and would balloon to the point that I would be ~$20 million over as soon as next year. It was really a roster that could've gone a lot of directions, but it's been my goal to turn this into a franchise that will be consistently competitive, year in and year out. Using my amnesty on Melo was the most obvious move, but the Kyrie/Rubio tandem was still going to be too much to handle. It doesn't seem like Kyrie is going anywhere, so...
I like Rubio a lot, and I hope he's successful in Detroit. I think he'll be even better this season than last one. But not a lot better, and I think he's overpaid for his production. This move allows me to take the salary he was eating and dedicate it to a position where I need more help. It also provides me with a (highly trade-able) asset in Detroit's 2018 1st that will come in handy in a draft that comes right as many of my contracts start to expire.
...I'm not super sure what Mo Buckets is doing here. I mean, maybe he winds up in a situation where he gets more minutes next season--say GS loses Barnes and Ezeli and somehow replaces them with nothing (ha) or he signs with a team that has a bigger need for a middling center. I'll wait out FA on him and the worst case scenario is he costs me $.5m.
